Is ‘Still Wakes The Deep: Siren’s Rest’ as Good as the Base Game?

3 mins read

After the success of last year’s Still Wakes the Deep, developers The Chinese Room surprised fans with a short DLC entitled Siren’s Rest that adds new depths to the base game’s already rich exploration of cosmic horror.

Set ten years after the disaster that caused the events of the base game, the player takes control of a deep-sea diver who’s tasked with retrieving artefacts and documenting what happened to the crew of the Birria D.

The horror comes from an excellent exploration of claustrophobia this time around. The player is forced to squeeze through small gaps and navigate the destroyed rig, all the while remaining on high alert because the player knows there’s a monstrous being somewhere in the wreck.

Tension-wise, Siren’s Rest blows the base game out of the water, but due to how short the DLC is, a lot of the grand ideas explored aren’t given enough time to be fully explored.

Siren’s Rest does answer a couple of the questions that went unanswered the first time round, however, the ending in particular leaves a massive question for players to ponder.

Without spoiling where the ending goes, the player is given two choices, and the last moment of the “bad” ending is more disturbing than it first may seem. Those who died on the rig are still there, just not in the way the player may think.

The cosmic entity that caused the destruction of the Birria D is just as mysterious as it was, but with the one monster that remains at the bottom of the ocean, there’s a clear evolution that the entity is forced to take due to the conditions of the sea.

It’s a shame the DLC doesn’t explore more mutated monsters, as the one that is present is arguably the best The Chinese Room have ever cooked up.

The future of Still Wakes The Deep is yet again unclear. One can hope more comes from this incredible story, but if Siren’s Rest is the end, then it’s undeniable that this game and its DLC are some of the finest horror games released this decade.
