Sorry, Baby ★★★★★: Edinburgh International Film Festival

2 mins read

Sorry, Baby is a heartbreaking, raw and enlightening film that shines a light on the complexities of trauma.

Sorry, Baby tells the story of Agnes and how they deal with a traumatic event that happens to them. The film jumps between the present and the past, slowly unraveling Agnes’ life after their trauma.

Eva Victor plays Agnes with a remarkable amount of grace, they’re able to capture trauma in a way many other performers are unable to do. Eva also directed and wrote Sorry, Baby

What makes the film so excellent is the careful balance of comedy and drama Eva is able to create. Even moments of intensity have a believable amount of comedy to them, most of the humour comes from the excellent line deliveries and off kilter performance.

The rest of the cast also do a great job with the film’s excellent writing, Naomi Ackie and John Carroll Lynch are some of the stand outs of the film. Lynch is only present for one segment but his impact on Agnes and his caring presence makes his short time memorable.

Sorry, Baby is divided into five segments that span four years in Agnes’ life. The first and last segments take place in the same year and both wrap up their story in a way that’s cathartic and realistic.

A24 have distributed the film worldwide and it fits neatly into their brand of introspective dramas that have a heart of gold.

Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby is a marvelous tale of trauma and what it means to be alive. Considering it’s their first time in the directors chair, Eva did a stunning job and put a lot of long time drama directors to shame.

If there’s one film to catch at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this year, you can’t go wrong with Sorry, Baby.
