Ms Marvel episodes 1 and 2: A new hero in town

3 mins read

Marvel brings yet another comic favourite character to the screen with the release of Ms Marvel on Disney+.

16-year-old Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a normal teen who is trying her best at school as well as trying not to let her family down. Kamala’s favourite hero is Captain Marvel, who she attends Avengers Con as, and she finds she might be more like her favourite hero than she thought as she gains powers after putting on a family heirloom.

The first two episodes show the exploration of family, culture and religion. It explores more than Kamala becoming a hero. It feels very similar to Moon Knight which explored Marc’s traumatic upbringing and acceptance of Steven, which makes these shows more than just superhero shows.

Ms Marvel has a completely different feel to any Marvel show we have seen before. The show is targeted toward teens, making it more relatable to them. It is fresh and fun, but it won’t be for all audiences. Ms Marvel is not a show to be missed as it may lead to Marvel’s next big introduction.

The show has been disappointing to some comic book fans with the slight change in Kamala’s powers. It is still unclear whether Kamala is inhuman. Do her powers come from the family artefact or does it simply unlock them? We see this hint in the second episode that there is more to her powers than the bracelet.

Inhumans haven’t been formally introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, Kamala is Inhuman, a group of superheroes who gain their powers through Terragenesis. Marvel’s Agents of Shield (which was canon to the MCU) first introduced Inhumans to the television screen. More recently, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had Inhuman Black Bolt cameo on the big screen.

The first episode includes a mid-credit scene that includes a minor Spider-Man: No Way Home character. The character is likely to be a large part of this show.

The second episode ends on a massive cliffhanger, next Wednesday can not come quick enough.

Episodes 1 and 2 of Ms Marvel are now streaming on Disney+.
