Deadpool and Wolverine struting across a street

Deadpool and Wolverine review: Cameo heavy fun ★★★★☆

5 mins read

The MCU’s latest outing, Deadpool and Wolverine, is a fun send off to a forgotten era of super hero films.

Unlike the recent MCU films, Deadpool and Wolverine functions as a send off to Fox Studios Marvel movies, less concerned about the wider MCU continuity.

However, the film does pull in many familiar faces and concepts from the MCU.

Deadpool and Wolverine follows Deadpool, as he attempts to save his universe, along the way stumbling across familiar friends and enemies. All the while he must get along with his new friend, Wolverine.

The plot and story takes a back seat to the interactions between the two titular characters. At times this can become frustrating, but the joy of seeing these two interact on screen is well worth the price of admission.

Like the previous Deadpool films, Deadpool and Wolverine is a comedy above everything else.

Every minute there’s a new joke, slapping the audience in the face with crass humour, most of them land, but some didn’t work for me.

Much of the humour comes from Deadpool’s fourth-wall breaks about Marvel and how the MCU has been in the last few years.

The film even opens on a funny rendition of the iconic dance from NSYNC’S classic Bye Bye Bye.

This opening has quickly become iconic and beloved by those who watched the film.

As previously mentioned, much of the fun of Deadpool and Wolverine is derieved from seeing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool interact with each other.

Both actors deliver a show stopping performance, which was surprising considering 2017’s Logan was meant to be Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine.

Jackman isn’t playing the same Wolverine who met his end in Logan. Thanks to the Multi-verse, he becomes a guilty shell out what Wolverine is known to be.

The trend of Multi-verses has become tired in the last few years, and Deadpool and Wolverine’s take is surprisngly great.

Most of the cameos come from previous Fox Marvel movies, with the exception of a couple of surprises near the end.

I’m not a huge fan of unnecessary cameos in super hero media, but Deadpool and Wolverine makes them bearable and highly enjoyable.

It’s hard not to love some of the surprises as the film goes on, especially if you’re a fan of Marvel films.

“F*ck you, Fox! I’m going to Disneyland!”

Much like Captain America: Civil War, there’s a real excitement to seeing Deadpool and Wolverine fight each other, and it’s incredible to see.

The film pushes it’s 15 and over rating to the maximum in their clashes. Blood flies and viscera covers everything.

It’s fun to see Wolverine finally cut loose without being held back by a 12 rating, like he was in the old X-Men movies.

There’s tons of huge action set pieces that’ll have fans clawing for more by the time the credits role.

The pacing of the film is confusing but that’s to be expected now from an MCU film.

It drags near the end of the first act, but the explosive introduction to the second act immediately remedies this.

Setting the first part of the film in a barren Mad Max-esque wasteland is fun for Easter eggs, but it leaves a lot to be desired since the enviroments isn’t used to its fullest.

Deadpool and Wolverine uses it’s licensed soundtrack perfectly. As previously mentioned the NYSYNC dance break is fantastic, but the use of AC/DC’s Hells Bells during Deadpool and Wolverines first fight is fantastic.

The soundtrack also features songs from The Greatest Showman and Madona.

“Lets f*cking go!”

Fun is the best word I can use to describes this film.

It’s not a cinematic master piece that’ll go down in history as a work of art that forever changed cinema.

Deadpool and Wolverine is a fun super hero film that knows what it is and what it’s audience wants to see.

As a long time fan of X-Men and Fox’s Marvel movies, it was sad to see it all end with this film, but I couldn’t have asked for a better send off.
