Stirling University’s first paramedics have graduated

2 mins read

Stirling University saw its first student paramedics graduate on Friday November 24. More than 30 students graduated, and a majority have already guaranteed a job with the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).

The BSc Paramedic Science course was launched at the university back in September 2020. The goal was to boost paramedic numbers in the area, especially amidst the pandemic.

Claire Crawford is the BSc Paramedic Science Programme Director at the University of Stirling.

She said, “These are our first graduates in Paramedic Science and we are both proud and excited to see them enter their first positions in pre-hospital care.”

“The BSc Paramedic Science prepares paramedics of the future through a variety of clinical and practice placement modules led by a diverse and experienced team.”

The graduates

21-year-old Ida Talghari was one of the graduates. She is set to start working at SAS in Glasgow at the start of next year.

Ida said, “It’s hard to pick one highlight, I have had incredible opportunities to develop as an individual through studying at Stirling.

“I really enjoyed my placements which were across both rural and urban areas of central Scotland and I feel really prepared for my new job as I have had such varied experiences; from responding to patients on boats to attending those in hairdressers in town centres.”

Devlin Frew changed his career plans from a career in history to one in paramedics.

He said, “I originally wanted to be a teacher, but decided to follow a new path and the role of a paramedic is so diverse, every day is different.

“I think I will enjoy meeting and working with lots of new people from a range of backgrounds – both patients and colleagues. I’m also looking forward to working in a role where I can do some good.”
