“VERSE” Review: The ballad of sapphic agony

3 mins read

Emily Jeffri’s latest single VERSE encapsulates the heartache many sapphics will relate to and weaves it into a ballad of pain and passion.

Jeffri is an independent artist. At only 18 years old she has already released a debut album which includes the hit single WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Which currently has almost 15 million streams on Spotify.

During the countdown to the release of VERSE, Jeffri teased that it is simply one chapter of a larger book. It’s a world she is creating through her music and one she will continue building.

Her music is one-of-a-kind, known for its ominous beats and eery lyrics. Jeffri’s debut album, 80’s Horror Movie, does what it says on the tin. The album is built on dark synth and lyrics that’ll leave you with goosebumps, each track more addicting than the last.

VERSE leaves behind Jeffri’s uneasy sound and bounds towards a style filled with agony, faith, and desire. Jeffri tells the story of a forbidden lesbian romance, an affair that occurred in the 1980s.

She has described the song as “the most gut-wrenching song about a forbidden love affair that took place decades ago.”

While fans have speculated on the story between the two fictional lovers, Jeffri isn’t confirming anything yet. Instead, she is sitting back and enjoying the theories. Although, she has tagged @yourssydney on TikTok, an account dedicated to finding their lost lover from the 80s – and probably the inspiration for this song.

Jeffri has built a world around the story, leaving messages and clues for her audience to decode and learn the true story of her fictional couple.

VERSE has been compared to Hozier’s legendary Take Me to Church, and this comparison is no exaggeration. VERSE really is THAT good. It creates a deep ache and a sense of mourning when you hear it, you can feel the desperation of the lover as they search for their other half.

Organs, church bells, and Jeffri’s vocals work in harmony to fabricate a surreal feeling of holiness – and pain to sapphic that resonate with the meaning behind the song.

Overall, VERSE is overflowing with emotional power and lets Jeffri’s pure talent take centre stage. It’s a perfect cry-in-the-car-song for any heartbroken sapphics out there – or those that just want a good cry.

VERSE is out now on Spotify. To stay up to date with Emily Jeffri, you can find her TikTok here.
