The Castros’ New Music Video Review: Pure, sparkling nostalgia

4 mins read

Five-piece indie group, The Castros, will release their video accompaniment to their Britpop revival tune The 90’s which released last year. The music video is set to drop this Friday (May 3).

The Castros are known for their fresh sound that piques interest while giving the comfort of familiarity, something that has led them to sell out shows all over the UK. The 90’s won the band the Upcoming Bands’ Mag Track of the Year 2023 with more than 1,000 votes.

The 90’s is a track loved by fans. It looks back on what the band believed to be the best era for music: the 90s. Those that grew up with 90s tunes will feel the memories of wild raves, late nights drinking and hanging with friends come flooding back when this song starts up.

The Castros created this track to showcase this “golden era” of music while reassuring people that 90s music lovers still exist. They not only worship this era of sound but also believe in its revival. “I feel as though I’ve watched it crumble […] But for those folk just like myself the music never dies,” The Castros’ vocalist, Brad, sings as the band reminisce.

The 90’s music video review

With so much meaning packed into The 90’s, creating a fitting music video was no easy task. However, the group pulled it off stunningly, with Josue Rodriguez shooting the video through a lens of nostalgia.

From the first few seconds of The 90’s music video, viewers are sucked into the world that was Britain in the 90s. The video tells the story of a middle-aged man rejecting modernity as he fondly remembers the 90s. Flashback scenes are shot on an older camera to give that true 90s feeling as they show a group of boys having fun and messing around to music.

The video shows the 90s in a saturated, happy fashion. Friends would get together and muck around in the park, go to gigs without their phones, and play cards at the local pub. These are all memories that listening to 90s music will bring back for a lot of people. The style of shooting works in harmony with Brad’s indie-swagger vocals and the upbeat drums and riffs.

It’s a great, unique, and truly British piece of film with several pop culture references included (can you spot them all?) that’ll leave 90s teens with an ache as time passes. The band wanted to commemorate the iconic decade of music and they have done it justice, leaving fans with a song and video that will be playing in their heads for days.

The 90’s can be streamed here, and the music video will be available to watch on the band’s YouTube channel on May 3.
