Emma and negroni

What’s a negroni sbagliato with prosecco?

2 mins read

If you’re on a niche part of TikTok, the words “negroni sbagliato” are probably rattling around your head right now.

For those not in the loop: a clip of Game of Thrones heart-throb Emma D’Arcy sharing their favourite drink has gone viral over the past few days.

“What’s your drink of choice?” asks their co-star Olivia Cooke.

“A negroni.” They answer. “Sbagliato. With prosecco in it!”

But what exactly is this mysterious drink? There’s a few components so lets break it down.

The classic negroni

The original cocktail hails from Italy and consists of equal parts gin, vermouth and Campari stirred together. It’s served with ice and garnished with an orange slice or peel.

As well as the spirit gin, vermouth is a fortified wine and Campari is a bitters. Overall it is a very bitter and strong drink.

Negroni sbagliato

Emma’s drink of choice is a variation on the classic cocktail. In this version, the gin is replaced with prosecco.

“Sbagliato” actually means “mistake” in Italian. Apparently, someone once added prosecco instead of gin by accident and it turned out to be quite popular. The sparkling wine makes the drink more delicate but doesn’t compromise on flavour.

With prosecco?

Emma describes their drink as “a negroni sbagliato with prosecco” in the video. But the “with prosecco” that Emma adds on is pretty much redundant, so if you want to order this, negroni sbagliato is all you need to ask for.

Will you give it a try?
