The University of Stirling has been ranked in the top 13 per cent of universities globally for their sustainability levels. It placed 177th out of 1,403 universities worldwide.

Stirling University placed 35th out of 93 in the UK rankings. This made it one of the top-ranking universities for sustainability in the UK.

Stirling’s rank has improved from previous years. In the 2023 rankings, Stirling sat between 220th and 201st. Scaling the rankings has shown “the University’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and reaching net zero by 2040”, a statement from Stirling University reads.

The ranking comes from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings website. The site has a list of the best sustainable universities, that are participating, going into 2024.

QS rankings are organised by a group of global higher education analysts. They showcase how different universities over the world are tackling the world’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues.

Professor Malcolm Macleod, Senior Deputy Principal (Operational Strategy and External Affairs) at the University of Stirling, said: “Our performance in the QS World Sustainability Rankings is a notable achievement, with the University ranking exceptionally well in areas of Equality, and Health and Wellbeing.

“As both an employer and a place of learning, we are committed to playing our role in addressing the climate crisis and this success is testament to our efforts to drive forward sustainable practices.

“We are continuing to take action to lower our institutional carbon footprint and support cleaner, greener ways of working in order to meet our target of achieving net-zero by 2040.”

Stirling also ranked highly with their international student and international facility ratios. They also ranked in 431st place (as a university in general) out of all universities worldwide this year.
