Stirling is home to a wealth of amazing small businesses. As the cost-of-living crisis trundles on, these producers continue to be some of the worst affected. If you have the cash to spare, support them – your taste buds will thank you.

The joy I get from going into the Port Street greengrocers’ is unmatched (am I officially grown-up now? Or just sad?). The bright colours are a feast for the eyes and the owners are wonderful. Their social media is hilarious too.
The quality of the fruit and veg is miles better than what you find in the supermarkets and cheaper than you’d expect. They do great soup kits too – all the fresh vegetables and seasonings you need for a different soup each week.
2. Hugh Black & Sons

Once you’ve picked up your five-a-day, you can wander on down to the butcher – also conveniently located on Port Street. This will probably be a bit pricier than you’re used to, so shopping here will likely be for special occasions.
Splurging is worth it though, again because of the quality. Low food miles mean it’s much better for the environment too.
3. Stirling Coffee

Making my morning coffee at home has become a solid part of my routine at university and only the best will do. I have 100 per cent turned into a coffee snob and I am owning it.
I particularly love the refill tins at Stirling Coffee on King Street. They have a wide selection of roasts and can them grind to your desired size or just leave as whole beans.
4. Milk & Honey

Is ice cream an essential food group? I would argue it definitely is. Be warned, however: once you try this stuff, nothing else will ever compare.
This life-changing ice cream is made weekly in Riverside by a family-run business. The texture is incredibly smooth and even the ‘simple’ flavours like vanilla are next level. It’s perfect for a dinner party with friends or treating yourself and enjoying a whole tub.
You’ll need to be quick though, as sales go live at midday every Wednesday and they often sell out. Either collect from Riverside or get it delivered straight to your door.
Bonus: Stirling Farmers Market

And finally, a bonus as this isn’t just a single producer. Port Street is host to a regular farmers market, which showcases a variety of traders. From fish and cheese to pies and candles, there’s plenty to stock up your fridge and your home.
Check out their Facebook page, Stirling Farmers Market, for more information on dates and sellers.
